How to travel to Chicago from O’Hare Airport (ORD)
If you travel to Chicago it is very likely you will be arriving at O’Hare International Airport, the airport is situated 28 km northwest of the downtown area (Chicago Loop). O’Hare Airport consists of four passenger terminals: Terminal 1, 2, 3 (domestic) and 5 (the international terminal).
After passing through security and retrieving your luggage we’re certain you're ready to explore the city so read carefully as we list all the options on how to get to the downtown (Chicago Loop) from O’Hare.
Airport Transit System - Both the ATS and TTB are the train and shuttle services that travel through all the terminals at the airport. Both operate 24 hours a day and are free and fully accessible to everyone.
Public Transportation - Located at Terminal 2 the CTA “L” Blue Line is the most economical method of transportation and it will take you directly from the airport to the downtown area (Chicago Loop). The train provides service to and from the airport 24 hours a day, with trains departing every 7 to 10 minutes. Estimated travel time from the airport to the Chicago Loop is about one hour. You will need to purchase tickets prior to boarding. Tickets can be purchased at the stations CTA VENTRA vending machines. The price per ticket is $5 and can be paid with cash or credit card. Once you board the train we recommend taking it to the Clark/Lake station, which is located in the Chicago Loop, this will provide easy access to your hotel. Depending on where your hotel is located, a short taxi ride might be necessary.
Taxi - The most convenient option is the most traditional, taxi. Taxi’s in Chicago have the capacity for 4 passengers, with cargo space for up 4 medium sized bags. Taxi stands are located on the lower level, just outside of Baggage Claim, at each terminal. Fares are based on traffic conditions, but an average fare from O'Hare to downtown (Chicago Loop) is $30-40. By law, all taxis are required to accept all major credit cards, if their credit card machine isn’t working they must not accept any passengers and leave the airport. One last detail, Chicago’s taxis come in a variety of colors but all will display a certified silver medallion on the hood of the vehicle.
Uber y Lyft Transportation applications Uber and Lyft are convenient methods out of the airport, albeit this option will require an internet connection via the airport's Wi-Fi or your mobile carrier. Fares are based on traffic conditions, but an average fare from O'Hare to downtown (Chicago Loop) is $28-30. Loading zones for Uber and Lyft are located on the upper levels between terminals 1 and 2 and terminals 2 and 3. Lower Level Terminal 5 exit Door 5C. This option is legal and permitted wherever you travel in Chicago.
Shuttle (Go Airport Express) Another option is the GO Airport Express, a shared passenger van. It's best for large groups of 5 or more who wish to travel together. A fare from O'Hare to downtown (Chicago Loop) is between $18 and $28. A private shuttle for up to 9 passengers is $163. Shuttle service is located at Terminal 1 (Door 1E), Terminal 2 (Door 2E), Terminal 3 (Door 3E) and Terminal 5 (Door 5E). Advanced notice is recommended however, they do welcome walk-ups.
